"I know your afflictions and your poverty -- yet you are rich... ...the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer... Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life... He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death." (2:9-11).
The Suffering Church. Christ suffered what they are about to suffer, and they like Him will be alive forevermore. Even the city survived, its modern name is Izmir in Turkey.
"...I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan." (2:9). Evidently the false Jews have more power and authority in Smyrna than in Philadelphia. Is this at least part of the reason the Christians in Smyrna suffer? Perhaps God gave them a different role in life. Did God create them for this purpose -- to suffer, like Jesus & Job...?
These people do not possess the riches of this world like those of Laodicea and they do not have the worldly power of Thyatira. Their power and riches are like those of Christ and come from Him. It is possible they have a ministry like Elijah and John the Baptist. It is possible that the 2 witnesses and the woman are from this type of church. These people may be servants to those of Thyatira and are used by God to lead those who "overcome" from all churches -- these people maybe referred to as the offspring of those from Smyrna.
